Teofimo Lopez beat Lomachenko in 2020—six years ago. Since then, he has lost twice and looked ordinary. That win no longer scares anyone, especially Rolly Romero.
But Lopez has been bringing up the victory against Lomachenko ahead of the Rolly fight and is still trying to dine out on the fight.
Sure, it had been an impressive victory but Lomachenko had an off night that night also, if you go back over the fight.
Some things to note on this and Lopez at this point;
- Lomachenko win happened in 2020—over six years old now
- Lost twice since, including a schooling by Shakur Stevenson
- Struggled against Martin and Ortiz—clear signs of decline
- No knockdowns since 2022 against Pedro Campa
- Stevenson beat him 119-109 across all three cards
- Analysts say the sharper version of Lopez is gone
- Lomachenko was older and smaller at 135 pounds
- Moving to 147 removes any physical advantage he once had
- Mikey Garcia said the old Teo has been missing for years
- Lopez himself questioned if he “still got it” after recent fights
Lopez is just trying to convince himself he is that same fighter he had been six years ago.
He is not.
The truth is going to fight him on Saturday night in the big Rolando Romero vs Teofimo Lopez boxing match in Vegas.
