Boxing is flying again as a sport but the demand for a Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua fight is not the same anymore.
Both won this weekend but both looked terrible in parts.
Joshua got knocked down twice tonight but a little known Albanian who no one knew outside of boxing people tonight.
Fury got tagged by a 46 year old Pole who had been defeated many times in years gone by last Friday night in Thailand.
Now all of a sudden they both appear to want the fight but let’s see if they make the bout.
Some notes on this:
- No titles on the line – neither man is a world champion anymore.
- Both are past their prime – Fury and Joshua are well beyond their peaks.
- Lost the undisputed dream – the 2021 moment when all belts were on the table is long gone.
- Underwhelming warm-ups – Joshua beat unknown Prenga; Fury fought 46-year-old Wach in Thailand.
- No US demand – American fans simply don’t care about this fight anymore.
- UK-only appeal – interest is mostly British, yet they’re forcing US-friendly start times.
- It’s a cash grab, not a legacy fight – more about the payday than boxing history.
- Endless negotiations killed the hype – years of will-they-won’t-they drained all excitement.
- Venue chaos – UK vs US vs Saudi disputes are still delaying it.
- It blocks the new generation – fans are ready to move on to younger heavyweights.
Anthony Joshua did not look great tonight in boxing and can safely say he will never get back to where he was as a boxer.
Same with Tyson Fury on Friday.
That is unfortunate as boxing is doing great again but that is the truth.
They may try to make the fight as it is still a big one in the UK even with the deterioration with the two boxers but it is not big anywhere else.
