Lomachenko wants to comeback but should he?

Vasyl Lomachenko wants to comeback soon in 2026 but should he though is the real thing here.to comeback to boxing, after leaving on a high.

He had that big win over the younger champion George Kambosos in recent years and apparently retired form boxing on a high.

But there continues to be a theme of former champions making comebacks all the time at the moment in 2026.

He is the latest in a long line of them. Let’s weigh up a few things on this first:

  • Vasiliy Lomachenko beat George Kambosos Jr by TKO in the 11th round
  • The fight was on May 12 2024 in Perth Australia
  • Lomachenko won the vacant IBF lightweight title with that win
  • He dropped Kambosos twice in round 11 before the corner threw in the towel
  • Lomachenko outlanded Kambosos 175 to 40 punches total
  • He landed 21 of 46 punches in round 4 while Kambosos landed 1 of 30
  • After the fight Lomachenko said it was his goal to be world champion again
  • Kambosos said he is one of the best of all time and a true champion
  • Lomachenko’s record moved to 18-3 with 12 KOs after the win

Now just two years on he wants back to boxing all of a sudden?

He appeared to be content in retirement and although some doubted how serious he was about being retired recently, it is still a bit of a surprise to see him want to comeback.

Here’s a few factors why he might want a comeback to boxing, Lomachenko:

  • He still looked elite vs Kambosos
  • Big money fights are still on the table
  • Unifications vs Stevenson or Tank are available
  • Legacy is not finished at 135
  • He wants undisputed again
  • Competitive fire is still there
  • He missed the structure of camp
  • Hall of Fame case could be stronger
  • Physical window is closing fast
  • Redemption for Lopez and Haney losses
  • Fans and Top Rank still want him
  • One fight puts him back in pound-for-pound talk
  • He can walk away after one more run

It doesn’t look like the Lomachenko retirement was that genuine after all — all in all.

Let’s see what happens with him in 2026.
