What will the Errol Spence Ronnie Shields game plan be in the big comeback fight this summer against Tim Tszyu in boxing?
That is a guessing game for now. But, based on research from previous fights and Shields’ fighters, you can formulate and accurate enough forecast.
The thing is there won’t be just one game plan either.
Some things to note on this first:
- Spence is no longer aligned with longtime trainer Derrick James.
- He has worked with Ronnie Shields, Roy Jones and Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards
- Spence said: “There’s a little difficulty… working with Ronnie Shields for the first time.”
- Spence: “I feel like a kid again in school learning new tricks of the trade.”
- Ronnie Shields has worked with Pernell Whitaker, Vernon Forrest, Evander Holyfield.
- Shields said he likes what he sees in training camp despite retirement talk.
- The fight is at 158 lbs catchweight, Spence’s debut at super-welterweight.
- Spence said: “Our plan is to bring the heat and reintroduce him to the game right away.”
- Tszyu said: “I understand facing a volume punching southpaw from facing Fundora.”
- Spence told X: “You think s—t sweet… I’m a do you so bad!”
This is a big change as well for Spence with the new trainer in Shields.
We don’t think it will be a high volume output but we do think Spence could look to counter punch a bit.
At least early on.
Spence can be a tricky southpaw and at 158 pounds he should have solid speed with hand speed if he is training well for the fight.
This might present some counter punching opportunities to get in first with his shots and step off to the side and shoot some uppercuts when he is on the inside too.
Tszyu might look to use his perceived added strength to lean on Spence and maybe test the Spence cardio over the duration as Spence has been out of action so long.
Spence will still also have Terence Crawford in his mind from three years ago.
