49 year old Mayweather still sharp on the pads but there is an added tension, anger and strange nervousness to his training.
Usually Mayweather and his team are all laughing and joking and so on but everyone has their arms folded all the time now in the gym and are very on edge clearly.
It must be that Mayweather is facing a big hit from the IRS with the IRS threatening to revoke his American passport soon which is a possibility.
He is still sharp though hand speed wise for a 49 year old Mayweather but is vastly slower and more rigid than he was years ago.
Some things to note from a science point of view on the now 49 year old Mayweather:
- Still has very fast hands but his overall pace is slower than his prime years
- Legs aren’t the same – age-related loss of explosive fast-twitch muscle reduces the “spring” for his famous lateral movement and pivots
- Defensive style relies more on ring IQ now – reflexes and leg drive decline with age, so he leans on timing and anticipation instead of pure foot speed
- Recovery between bursts takes longer – older muscle loses power output faster, which is why exhibition rules with shorter rounds suit him
- Maintains elite technique and accuracy – skill and neural efficiency for punching hold up much better with age than leg explosiveness
- Joint wear from decades of fights – cartilage and tendon changes make the legs feel heavier, limiting constant bouncing for long stretches
- Cardio base remains strong but high-intensity leg output for quick steps fades first as fighters age
- Training now focuses on preservation – less plyometric volume to protect the legs, more emphasis on sharp hands and defense
- Exhibition bout set for Greece this summer pits him against another veteran, so both are past peak leg explosiveness
- Net result: looks sharp in spots – hand speed and timing are still there, but the legs can’t produce the same prime-level movement
That said, he is taking on a kickboxer next in Greece in his latest boxing exhibition which shouldn’t trouble him.
If he signs May Pac 2 though as a proper boxing professional match later in the year and Pacman can get in strong physical condition, maybe Pacman will think he has a chance against a now much older Mayweather.
