Errol Spence Speaks On Aboriginal Australians

Errol Spence Speaks on aboriginal Australians ahead of his upcoming fight with Australian Tim Tszyu that will take place in Australia.

It will be a three and a half year lay off away from boxing since the Terence Crawford beating and TKO loss for Spence.

A Ferrari car crash which nearly killed him before that too.

Speaking ahead of the fight with up to the mark Tszyu — Spence brought up something interesting on Australia:

“I just want to acknowledge the Aboriginal people, the struggles that they’ve been through. I just want to show respect when I come out for my ring walk. I want to show respect to the Aboriginal people.”

He added:

“I know they’ve been through a lot, and I just want to show my respect to them.”

Let’s clarify some facts on the above for those unfamiliar.

10 facts about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples:

  • First Nations: They are Australia’s original inhabitants and Traditional Custodians.
  • Oldest culture: Aboriginal cultures are 65,000+ years old — world’s oldest continuous culture.
  • Connection to Country: Land and waters hold deep spiritual and cultural meaning.
  • Acknowledgement common: “Acknowledgement of Country” pays respect to Elders past and present.
  • 250+ nations: Over 250 distinct language groups existed before colonization.
  • Two peoples: Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples are distinct groups.
  • ∼3.8% of population: Based on recent Census data.
  • Colonial history: Long history of race-based mistreatment noted in research.
  • Health services trusted: High trust in Aboriginal Health Services and local GPs.
  • Strong resilience: Culture and knowledges are vital to wellbeing and self-determination.

Boxing notes as well for context here:

  • Tszyus undefeated at home: Tim, Kostya, and Nikita have never lost in Australia.
  • New fans likely: Spence’s public respect on a global stage can bring Aboriginal boxing fans into his corner and grow the sport’s reach.

Overall, the more new fans of boxing in Australia and worldwide the better for the sport.

So the above is welcome and a good move.

Errol Spence spoke very confidently here about his comeback against Tszyu soon despite the layoff from the sport.
