It was a great Cinco De Mayo 2026 for boxing but Oscar De La Hoya is gone off the deep end it appears after the fights.
The former world champion turned promoter it has been clear has been in decline as a promoter in recent years.
De La Hoya has publically struggled with alcohol and substances for some years.
Previously he said that wasn’t the case but it obviously still is as he said a short time ago after the Benavidez vs Ramirez fight:
“I’m gonna get f****d up. Best fights I’ve ever seen in my life. Happy Cinco De Mayo.”
He added:
“I’m getting loaded (drunk).”
More than concerning but not surprising.
His ability to make great fights has clearly been in decline for some time and now this.
For those new to boxing not familiar with him, some facts.
- Drugs used: Cocaine and alcohol
- First drank: Age 8
- Started cocaine: ∼2007, 2 years before retiring
- Drank during camp: Week before Pacquiao fight in 2008
- Rock bottom: Thought about suicide
- First rehab: May 2011
- Second rehab: September 2013
- Beat tests: Timed use to avoid detection
- Trigger: Depression and childhood trauma
- Sober run: 3 months sober in Aug 2011
The fights were excellent however tonight and well done again to David Benavidez.
Some of his combinations were sloppy and wide punches though, Ramirez was very slow in there and it seemed easy for Benavidez to land on him.
He had good speed up at that weight but overall a solid win.
Mexico’s number one star boxer Canelo was even ringside at the fights tonight for Cinco De Mayo boxing weekend 2026 in Las Vegas.
