Conor Benn is only just boxing in America now on Paramount Plus so this is very strange talk from his father Nigel Benn.
Benn senior is a former world super-middleweight champion.
He has been speaking in some places about his son Conor Benn already having his retirement plans in place.
Conor Benn is still very young and recently beat Regis Prograis back at welterweight — maybe not as impressive as his win before that at middleweight against Chris Eubank Jr either.
So for Benn senior to already be talking retirement is not a good move.
Why Nigel Benn talking about Conor Benn’s retirement plans already is very unwise:
- Conor is still young and on the rise after beating Regis Prograis — early retirement talk kills momentum.
- Publicly discussing retirement can make Conor seem less committed to fans and promoters.
- It plants doubt in potential opponents’ minds that Conor might not be fully focused.
- Boxing is mental — even hinting at retirement can weaken a fighter’s own drive and hunger.
- Reduces leverage in negotiations for big future fights and paydays.
- Makes Conor look like he’s already thinking about the end instead of chasing titles.
- Damien-like father comments have hurt other boxers’ careers and family dynamics (e.g., Eubanks, Furys).
- Signals to Zuffa and new promoters that long-term investment might be short.
- Fighters perform best when fully locked in; retirement chatter distracts.
- Can invite more pressure and questions from media about every performance.
- Historically, premature retirement talk has led to earlier actual retirements or slumps.
- Undermines the “hungry young contender” image Conor is building.
- Risks demotivating Conor’s team and training camp.
- Boxing fans dislike fighters who seem to be planning exits too soon.
- Could affect sponsorships and endorsement deals tied to an active, ambitious career.
There’s an old saying in boxing that when a fighter has one eye on retirement he is already retired in his mind.
Which is not a good thing for an active professional fighter.
Especially someone as young as Benn junior who only just started to base more of his fights in the US only recently after leaving Matchroom.
Talks suggest a Conor Benn vs Ryan Garcia fight is still possible.
