Mexico is a country that has produced many legends in the sport and great world champions over the years.
Certainly in the 21st century and 20th century as regards professional boxing since the formation of the rules of professional boxing you see today.
Before that, the Aztecs and others many years ago long before boxing maybe far greater warriors and fighters that are not even known about in today’s times.
But let’s stick to boxing and Canelo is considered the best Mexican boxer in the world today and certainly one of the biggest names in boxing worldwide.
He looked not sharp at all in his last fight at super-middleweight to Terence Crawford on Netflix in his defeat on points to him last September in Las Vegas.
Crawford put on a clinic to move up two entire weight categories to outbox him and win a decisive UD points decision.
Many think Alvarez was a shell of his former self and many times since moving up to bigger weights in recent times he has come unstuck in the latter part of his career against the likes of Crawford and Dmitry Bivol as well.
He’s a multiple weight world champion in many weights and his boxing ability is always improving but when he came up against Crawford in the technical boxing department he could not cut it at all.
He was very under par compared to him and if you compare his boxing to greats like Benitez, Sanchez, Chavez and other Mexican legends, some will say he is not a good technical boxer compared to some of them.
Getting caught too much at times straight on with his opponents and he is there to be hit a little too much.
Particularly at the bigger weights.
But he has shown good power and has shown he is willing to always face top tier competition.
But he never fought David Benavidez and that will always be a bone of contention with many American and of course Mexican boxing fans as well.
He is due to have his comeback fight this September since the Crawford loss which most possibly will be in the Middle East somewhere.
It is maybe too early to start talking about all time great debates with Canelo as well while he is still boxing and alive.
Who knows what will happen Canelo this year.
