It is big fight week this week and Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez are gearing up to do battle in a big fight to say the least.
Lopez is still a big name in the sport although he’s been a shell of himself lately.
Stevenson on the other hand has been conquering all around him every day for a while now.
In his fights and in his training and more than anything his ability to show he’s getting better as a fighter all the time in there.
It looks to us thought that Stevenson is still leaving a lot of his ability held back, we don’t think anyone has seen anything near his
best fighting yet in professional boxing.
He is a calm boxer for still a relatively young boxer when he’s in there. He is interested in being patient and learning more about the reaction of his foe as he batters him, usually.
Taking stock of how his foe reacts to being broken down, toyed with, bust up, piece by piece.
That’s how he fights though. Stevenson in some ways is kind of like a mini Bernard Hopkins but more fluid than Hopkins maybe, his head movement is far better as well.
His defense is much better than Hopkins’ was and Stevenson’ ability to slip punches and even jabs is something far ahead of what the great Hopkins was able to do.
But why he reminds of us of him is when he lets his hands go he, like Hopkins, tends to break a guy down piece by piece, almost toying with his foe as he batters him, watching how he reacts, to learn more about him in live time almost.
But he needs to start fast this weekend and Lopez obviously does as well to have any chance.
We think if Stevenson even starts relatively well in the bout and sticks to his boxing and applies pressure intelligently and aggressively on Lopez, he’ll drown him over the duration as the bout goes on.
If Stevenson boxes anywhere near like he can Lopez won’t be able to swim in those waters with him.
He’ll be drowned.
