As a boxer Oscar De La Hoya was a great multi-weight world champion but as a promoter in recent years he has gone from bad to worse over time, clearly.
Most of his best fighters have left his company Golden Boy long ago, going back to Canelo Alvarez and others.
There are people at Golden Boy that would quite possibly do a much better job than De La Hoya of running it these days, clearly.
He continues to let big fights fall through and the recent Vergil Ortiz vs Jaron Ennis bout falling apart is only the latest.
As a boxer many years ago he had a good impact on the sport as a decorated team USA Olympic boxer and then as a multi-weight world champion in professional boxing.
How did Oscar De La Hoya impact boxing and why is he so ineffective as a promoter in recent times?
But he never beat his biggest rival Floyd Mayweather at the end of the day, when all is said and done.
At that very highest premier pound for pound level he fell short. He had some success early on in the fight but if you go back and watch it, Mayweather won that fight handily enough on points and just way too sharp, too intelligent, and too good a fighter for him.
In recent years as a promoter since Canelo Alvarez has left him more boxers have and although some useful smaller cards he puts on, the big promotions and events in reality basically never involve him anymore.
Why he has become less competent and less effective as a boxing promoter in recent years is a difficult question to answer.
Maybe it is his lack of motivation.
Maybe it is the new competition coming to the market all the time in the US and internationally.
Maybe it is because fighters have left him.
De La Hoya recently made a very bold claim on one Shakur Stevenson here.
