Why Father Son Trainers In Boxing Don’t Always Work Out

Father Son Trainers

Father son trainer duos have been around in boxing for a while not in top flight professional boxing but do not always work out.

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t and often times the son gives the father the boot and sends him packing. Other times it can work out.

Not just with trainers but managers like Bill and Devin Haney, they appear to make that work well over the years.

Teofimo Lopez and has father have worked well together over the years and still do as of 2026 ahead of the big upcoming Shakur Stevenson vs Teofimo Lopez fight on January 31st shortly this month.

Shawn Porter and Kenny Porter worked very well over the years too to world title level at the highest level of the sport as well.

However things don’t always work out.

Floyd Mayweather at many times did not get along with his father and sent him packing famously from the Mayweather gym one time and if you look at much of Mayweather’s success, that was achieved when he had his uncle Roger Mayweather in his corner for when he was beating De La Hoya, Hatton and many others.

Recently since 2026 started former WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr also fired his father and this would have been done after a lot of thought.

Norman Jr lost for the first time to Devin Haney last year and maybe had a bit of an off night as well — he will surely come back very strong this year.

Boxing is flying at the moment so expect some other fighters to give father trainers or managers the boot if things are not working out for them.
