Not long ago former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was asked some questions on the history of the sport of boxing.
Tyson is literally a walking encyclopedia on boxing, he knows more about the old fights and fighters than more or less any commentator in boxing today, more or less.
Bert Sugar has died now rest him but Tyson is literally up there for knowledge not only on boxing history but the history of the technical aspects of the sport and how the sport was founded, how it developed, the mentalities of fighters and champions and so on.
He just doesn’t talk about it or give himself enough credit on it because he’s too modest sometimes and a legend that’s why, but we will give him credit and others in boxing behind the scenes always do as well on his knowledge of history.
Important for new fans of the sport who are only tuning in this year maybe because of Netflix, Jake Paul, influencers or even the UFC starting to promote boxing, or because of all the new exciting things happening in the East now.
Sonny Liston, The Most Menacing Boxer That Ever Lived
Tyson was asked who was the most intimidating fighter ever and he always said Sonny Liston.
Tyson is the youngest heavyweight champion ever and he said that, not us.
The oldest heavyweight champion of the world ever George Foreman, said the same, Liston was always up there as the most intimidating boxer not just in boxing.
No one knows what happened at the end of his life, he may have had a drug problem some say with heroin but that is not confirmed, nor is out place to stay.
What he achieved in boxing was amazing for his time and if not for Muhammad Ali, he was one of the greats of his time.
He just ran into a Muhammad Ali who was quite brilliant when they fought.
No one was beating Ali those nights.
No one.
Liston doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the great heavyweight champions in history, but he is, for his size on the biggest hitters pound for pound when he connected.
