The Problem With Delaying Big Fights

The Problem With Delaying Big Fights

We live in a very different time only recently for professional boxing than say even a few years ago in terms of big fights being made.

What is a big fight.

Well, usually you are talking your big world title fights involving marquee names that the general sports consumer, not just boxing fan, is aware of, or has some idea about their story line and ability level.

Invariably when you pit the best fighters against the other best fighters, for a world title, this usually results in a big fight in the eyes of boxing and sometimes general sports fans.

Other big fights these days though can include big name celebrity fights or retired legends coming back in exhibitions or even real pro boxing match comeback returns.

But at its core making the big fights between fighters in their primes is what fans want to see, if you delay them too much they lose a bit of their edge and appeal to fans sometimes.

The Problem With Delaying Big Fights

Look at Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua, and years ago Joshua vs Deontay Wilder, both were not made and the former has been delayed whereby next year in 2026, Fury vs Joshua may finally happen.

Sometimes it can lead to an anti-climax for fans because of this.

When the fight does eventually happen the hype can sometimes have filtered out and the buzz is gone.

The other problem is if you delay them too much one fighter might lose and the prospect of making a big fight falls through as the big fight could have only happened for a title if both kept winning to set up a unification fight sometimes.

Less the case now where boxers can have a loss again and still get into the big fights.

This happened though with Wilder losing some years ago, same with Joshua, in terms of derailing Wilder vs Joshua, and then Joshua vs Fury.

Make the fights as soon as possible is the only solution and anyway, the turn around time to market them is less than a month now with online anyway, so every incentive these days to make the big fights right there and then as it takes way less time to build them up now.

Way less.
