Former world champion and commentator Paulie Malignaggi has often sought conflict, confrontation and controversy. Maybe he’s done it again.
The New Yorker was an excellent fighter in his time in terms of boxing skill and heart.
Some of the fights he was in over the years were classics. The Miguel Cotto fight comes to mind straight away.
Outside of boxing since retired he has been a great commentator, but, he gets some eyebrows raised at times.
Speaking on a live show with Boxing Scene, Malignaggi claimed black boxers in today’s times get marketed, or pushed more by promoters, if according to him they are more ghetto.
Paulie Malignaggi Makes Controversial Remark On Black Boxers
His exact quote was:
“Why do black fighters only get marked when they’re quote unquote ghetto.”
That is a sensitive topic given the history but you know that would be up to professional boxers of these times to respond to.
At the end of the day, no matter where a pro boxer is from, color of skin, religion or belief if they are good enough to become world champions, they basically do 99 per cent of the time.
Regardless of marketing as well.
The best boxers always make it to the top and become world champion.
Staying champion is often the more challenging thing once they do.
Malignaggi recently was one of the few that gave Manny Pacquiao a chance at beating Marrios Barrios for the WBC welterweight title (he was nearly right, they drew).
