De La Hoya was absent from Garcia vs Benn despite co-promoting it, his exclusion proves he’s no longer a major player in elite boxing promotion.
He simply never turned up on fight night in the end to Garcia vs Benn either.
Some notes on this after the dust has settled on Saturday at this point;
- Not co-promoter in practice — just a name on paper. Golden Boy has Garcia under contract, but had zero presence.
- Apparently denied credentials but this had not been confirmed at all, though some claimed this
- Garcia invited him to walk him out. It never happened.
- Promoter of the event previously said – “I don’t like Oscar, Oscar doesn’t like me.”
- De La Hoya said he teased a Vegas “surprise” — it was blocked according to some but no evidence of this either.
- Years of feuding with Garcia at this point; no say in his matchmaking.
- Another promoter ran everything. De La Hoya couldn’t even get in the building.
- Influence shrinking despite new DAZN deal.
- Canelo left, Ortiz sued — now erased from his top fighter’s mega-fight.
- Not bad luck — a power shift. He’s no longer a must-have at the top.
DAZN have signed deals to very rapidly in decline no longer influential promoters and players in the US recently.
PBC and Oscar De La Hoya to name just a couple, they must not be doing that good either, clearly.
The sport of boxing is doing great though, better than ever, and emerging companies and organizations and players continue to come to the sport all the time.
The fight in the end on Saturday had been entertaining but that’s about it, a couple of rounds and Garcia closed the bout.
Not the greatest promotion though, very poor actually, the promoter of the event hugely in decline also.
The Haney fight and rematch much bigger and had it have happened, more people by far would have tuned in.
No one asked for the Conor Benn fight, a dud fight, a boxer from the UK that no one had heard of in America.
The Ryan Garcia Devin Haney rematch is the fight people are interested in, nothing has changed in that.
