Some might argue that the second round knockout of Conor Benn had been Ryan Garcia’s maximum potential in the sport on Saturday night.
Then again, it proved little as the fight only lasted a couple of rounds.
Some notes on this post-fight;
- The Benn win was his first title defense and came at welterweight
- At 28, Garcia is entering maybe his athletic prime with speed intact, then again, fighters are fighting at the highest level these days into their mid 40s
- The right hand that ended Benn was his “other” hand
- Both career losses came against elite opposition
- A unification fight would test if this form is sustainable
- The fight lasted only 85 seconds, leaving stamina questions maybe for some at 147 pounds
- His right hand has been a recurring injury issue
- Post-fight confidence suggests he needs to be tested in bigger fights
Conor Benn had not been in the league of professional boxing of Ryan Garcia.
Garcia, a far more capable, technically gifted and more accomplished boxer in all aspects of the sport of boxing.
The Ryan Garcia talk before the fight proved prophetic.
He delivered on it.
That said, the Ryan Garcia accolades in his boxing career still need that Devin Haney rematch at the end of the day.
