Benn Makes Weight for Ryan Garcia fight — But at What Cost?

Conor Benn to the 147-pound welterweight limit for his fight with Ryan Garcia, describing the process as “the pits of hell” before weighing in successfully at 146 pounds.

So, he made the limit of 147 pounds, both fighters did.

This had been up for debate going into the fight on if Conor Benn could make the limit at all, he did by some margin, too.

Some notes on this;

  • Had not fought at welterweight in over four years.
  • Previously campaigned as high as middleweight (160 pounds).
  • Took a 150-pound catchweight fight first to step down gradually, for the Regis Prograis fight.
  • Described the cut as being “dragged to the pits of hell.”
  • Looked gaunt and drawn throughout fight week.
  • Made weight successfully at 146 pounds tonight.
  • Planned to rehydrate up to roughly 175 pounds by fight night.
  • No rehydration clause in the contract.
  • Garcia warned the dehydration was genuinely dangerous.
  • Benn said he’d vacate and move up in weight afterward.

Ryan Garcia, the champion, came in at 145.5 pounds a short time ago.

Both are ready to fight.

But the grueling procecess of making the 147 pounds limit for Benn cannot be discounted in terms of its difficulty.

That may have taken something out of him going into the fight.

At the same time, the fact he can be as heavy as he is interested in being tonight is also an advantage for him.

If he bulks up to over 175 pounds and he has the gas tank to go the full duration, and is strong, he can cause some problems tonight.
