James Toney Garcia’s Shoulder Roll Blueprint to Neutralize Benn

James Toney Garcia's Shoulder Roll Blueprint to Neutralize Benn

Ryan Garcia can use James Toney’s aggressive shoulder roll to counter Conor Benn’s pressure.

It is intriguing that Garcia has asked for the advice of Toney, a defensive guy, a former legend of the sport, to advise him ahead of the Benn fight soon.

An unexpected link up and combination to say the least, of course.

James Toney back in the day had no time for Benn’s father Nigel Benn, he infamously called him a bum and fighters from England bums on a teleconference call on a Jonathan Ross episode back many years ago.

Hammering Chris Eubank senior on the tele conference call into the show also, at the time.

He is advising Ryan Garcia ahead of a fight against the son, Conor Benn, shortly, some things to note on this shoulder roll advise;

  • Adopt Toney’s aggressive pocket style over Mayweather’s safety-first approach
  • Roll with Benn’s right hand and instantly counter with a straight right
  • Throw hooks and uppercuts from unconventional angles off the roll
  • Bait Benn into reckless entries and punish with sharp counters
  • Force shorter Benn to reach, leaving him open to return fire
  • Tighten wide stance to stay balanced and explosive after each roll
  • Use the roll to smother Benn’s attack and launch immediate offense
  • Set up the left hook as the knockout threat against a charging Benn
  • Stay focused and committed, as the roll fails without discipline

If he uses the shoulder roll properly it could be effective but Garcia is an offensive, attacking boxer usually.

Hence this is a highly unusual link up and thing to prepare to use for the first time in a live fight.

To say the least.
