Teofimo Lopez labored to a majority decision win over Rolly Romero, raising serious questions about his decline.
Look, Lopez proved he had some heart and toughness, that had been a given going into the fight.
He is tough, he can fight and usually, he is in entertaining fights. That proved true again on Saturday night but it had been a little bit of a chess match at times also.
Stevenson schooled Lopez earlier this year at 140 pounds and Lopez scraped by against Romero at 147 pounds Saturday just gone, some notes on this;
- Shakur beat Lopez 119-109 — 11 rounds to 1
- Lopez landed only 72 punches out of 468 thrown
- Shakur landed 44% of his punches; Lopez just 15%
- Lopez couldn’t mount any offense against Shakur
- Against Rolly, Lopez won a tight majority decision — one judge had it a draw
- Rolly hurt Lopez, cut him, and wobbled him
- Lopez hasn’t KO’d anyone since 2022
- At 147, he relies on jabs, not power — landed 62 jabs but only 7 power punches to the head
- His corner had no answers against Shakur — just told him to “show his power”
- If he barely beat Rolly and got schooled by Shakur, the gap is huge
It proves us and many right that Teofimo Lopez had been in decline the entire time, since the Barboza points victory last year, actually.
The Shakur Stevenson fight compounded that and he got by barely against a Romero that had less ability than him but still pushed him to his limits.
