Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez finally discuss that spar

Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez fight soon in an exciting fight pitting two of America’s well known boxers against one another.

In a big welterweight (147 pounds) clash next month on August 22nd in Las Vegas.

A sparring session took place on in May eleven years ago at a time that had both boxers much younger and only aspiring at that point.

Romero and Lopez said together in a face off that proved for intriguing viewing when that spar came up.

Rolly Romero said at one point:

“Teo hit me with a good body shot one time. It was right before his debut. We did six rounds and he was like, “One more.” I’m like, “We did one more.” He’s like, “No, one more.” Johnny Tocco’s gym .We were originally going to fight. That’s really how we met — at the Olympic qualifiers in Colorado Springs for 2016.”

But on who got the better of the spars, Romero said:

Rolly added:

“I believe Teo got the better.”

Teofimo mentioned:

“We both had our moments. Everybody had their moments for sure.”

Maybe some gamesmanship at play above.

Some mental attacks going in already by both a little also.

Sparring is sparring at the end of the day but here are some notes on the above:

  • Lopez has mental edge from old sparring footage showing him dominate a young Romero
  • Lopez weaponized the footage on social media to brand Romero a “fake champ”
  • Romero counters by noting he was just 17 and hadn’t turned pro yet
  • Romero claims he also has footage of himself hurting Lopez and busting his nose
  • Romero says he “saved the kid from killing himself” – flipping the narrative
  • This could be a deliberate tactic to lull Lopez into overconfidence
  • Romero framing himself as the one who “knows everything about” Lopez is dangerous
  • Romero has openly called Lopez “my little brother” and praised him for sending money years ago
  • Friendly talk may be a mind game to soften Lopez
  • The goal is to keep Lopez off-balance before their August clash

Teofimo Lopez has not been great in recent years but is moving up to 147 pounds for this next month.

Maybe that is going to suit him more, let’s see.

Rolly Romero on his side is certainly going over the top at times in his training already for the bout.
