Errol Spence might be open for a certain punch more than any this weekend against Tim Tszyu and it is a big concern for him.
Texan Spence had a big eye injury to his retina some years back.
If you look through some of his open workouts this week in Australia he looks slow and rigid and his coordination even looks a little off.
For a boxer’s hand-eye-coordination to be even marginally off, it border line blasphemy in boxing terms.
If this is the case even a little bit, at the highest level, it can be targeted in terms of the old eye injury to compound his lack of possible vision in the bout.
Some things to factor in on this:
- Spence had surgery for a detached retina in his left eye in 2021 after feeling a “pop” in sparring.
- The injury likely stemmed from his 2019 Ferrari crash where he was ejected without a seatbelt.
- He underwent cataract surgery on the same eye in early 2024, canceling the Crawford rematch.
- Against Crawford, it looked like Spence “didn’t see the punches coming” as Crawford targeted it.
- Tim Tszyu vowed: “I’m coming for every limb… especially that retina.”
- Spence called the comment “way too far” and refused to shake Tszyu’s hand.
- Trainer Ronnie Shields agreed: “To say ‘I’m going to take your eye out’… that’s way too far.”
- Spence admitted he still sees a “shadow” in his peripheral vision.
- The injury has been a major talking point throughout the fight buildup.
- Spence says he feels “blessed to be here” after surviving the crash.
- US media ignored Tszyu’s comments, which Spence called a sign of his “threat level.”
- Despite the risks, Spence says he’s treating this fight as “fun,” not fear.
This is something that Tim Tszyu can absolutely target this weekend in their big fight in Australia.
Why not?
If it is there to be targeted he should and it is only a smart thing to do with Errol Spence.
