Could Shakur Stevenson deal with the speed and power of Ryan Garcia at welterweight

A lot of hype is being made about Newark’s Shakur Stevenson at the moment but could he deal with a Ryan Garcia?

Stevenson had the big win at 140 pounds earlier this year against New Yorker Teofimo Lopez.

He boxed well and landed more or less at will at what looked a very declined Teofimo Lopez past his sell by date.

Lopez returns soon up at 147 pounds against Rolando Romero.

Ryan Garcia next is tipped to try to sign a fight soon with the UK’s Conor Benn, even though the Devin Haney rematch remains a far bigger fight.

Shakur Stevenson in fact is being linked with a 144 pounds catchweight bout at the moment with Haney.

But what about Stevenson vs Garcia?

Garcia of California and Stevenson of Newark is intriguing:

  • Garcia hits with more power than Stevenson.
  • Garcia is as fast maybe a little faster with his hands than Stevenson.
  • Stevenson is a better defensive boxer than Garcia.
  • Both are two of the new big names in US boxing in recent years.
  • Both can be a little wild outside the ring, Garcia more so maybe.
  • Spectators enjoy their use of social media often, even though a bit wacky at times, highly entertaining.
  • The build-up to such a bout would be a big one in the US with their personalities.
  • Stevenson is the undefeated of the two and the more in form fighter.

Not many are talking about it yet but it is something surely Garcia has considered.

The far bigger name of the two in America, Ryan Garcia would of course be the A-Side in any such talks for a bout.

He has said previously that he beats Shakur Stevenson easily as he is too big a fighter for him.

Size does not always win fights but if Ryan Garcia has his head screwed on, which is not always, and is motivated, it would test Stevenson in more ways than ever.
