The weakest era of heavyweights is here as the sport goes great and returns to the masses at the moment.
Boxing is doing great and is returning to the masses all the time faster and faster as the days go on.
But the heavyweight division is not as good as it used to be, it is entertaining however and the main champion Oleksandr Usyk almost lost to a man with one pro boxing match to his name at the weekend.
That never happened in heavyweight boxing history before.
Some things to note here:
Why Usyk vs Rico was shocking
- Verhoeven is a kickboxer with just 1 prior boxing bout
- Usyk looked sluggish and was losing rounds late
- Scorecards had Verhoeven ahead or even after 10
- Usyk came in career-heaviest and struggled to impose his style
- Stoppage came at 2:59 of round 11, 1 second before the bell
- Verhoeven was on his feet protesting, fans called it “worst stoppage ever”
What’s next
- One mandatory is Agit Kabayel – fight him or risk being stripped
- Verhoeven wants a rematch, Usyk offered it
- Other bodies already warned Usyk about fighting kickboxers vs mandatories
- If he rematches a kickboxer instead of defending, titles get stripped
Usyk won the fight in the end but fell in most people’s pound for pound rankings dramatically.
At the end of the day he has fallen in the Boxing News and Views official pound for pound rankings which says it all after that for Usyk.
Rico almost shocked the world.
