Daniel Dubois Ariel Helwani Interview Falls Flat On Its Face

A Daniel Dubois Ariel Helwani interview is gaining attention for it being a cringe interview from Ariel Helwani.

Helwani has started doing more interviews with boxers in the last year or so after previously covering MMA (mixed martial arts) and UFC.

Further proof of how close MMA, UFC and professional boxing have become now as sports.

Former heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois returns this weekend against Fabio Wardley in a heavyweight title fight and an interview of Dubois’ with Helwani has been called Helwani’s most awkward interview yet.

This might be to do a little bit with the cultural differences and so on but more than anything this is to do with Helwani’s lack of expertise with boxing and boxers.

Let’s look at a few facts here.

Facts: Ariel Helwani & Boxing Coverage

CategoryDocumented FactWhy It Matters in Boxing Interviews
Primary Sport BackgroundHelwani’s career focus is MMA. He hosts The Ariel Helwani Show for Uncrowned & Yahoo Sports covering combat sports with MMA as the core. His most cited Sky Sports boxing segment was analyzing Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois in Sept 2024.Boxing has distinct history, sanctioning bodies, rankings, and etiquette. Fighters often expect interviewers to know lineal titles, mandatories, and gym politics.
Boxing Guest FrequencyThe Ariel Helwani Show regularly books boxers: David Benavidez, Daniel Dubois, Caroline Dubois, Lou DiBella all appeared Mar-Apr 2026.Regular boxing guests increases expectation that host knows active narratives like sparring rumors, injuries, and camp drama.
Incident Cited by CriticsDubois abruptly left a DAZN interview days before the Fabio Wardley fight. Report said interviewer “wasn’t very serious at all and might be new to boxing” and asked “what was the worst and best things about boxing”.That style of question is viewed as amateur in boxing. Heavyweights risking health in camp typically expect substantive fight-specific questions, not generic ones.
Dubois’ Known DemeanorMultiple outlets note Dubois is “always a calm and collected customer” and walking out was “very unusual for him”.When an even-keeled fighter walks, observers often blame interview prep/tone, not the fighter.
Helwani Show Episode TitleThe 5/5/26 show was titled “Ariel Helwani’s worst interview ever, David Benavidez, Daniel Dubois, Luke Rockhold, Tatsuro Taira”.The title itself became a talking point. Regardless of who had the awkward moment, it ties Helwani’s brand to “worst interview” discourse.
Current Boxing StorylinesIn April-May 2026, Dubois was dealing with: 1) Sparring injury reports & hospital rumors, 2) Fight with Fabio Wardley, 3) Questions about pulling out.Missing or mishandling those topics in an interview can make a boxer feel the host isn’t across their career, increasing tension.

Helwani has not been very impressive in his attempts in boxing so far overall but maybe he can improve moving forward.

Boxing and mixed martial arts are totally different sports at the end of the day.

But are closer than ever now, as sports, that fact remains.

So much so the UFC are now even promoting boxing and have boxing right here on front of the UFC website itself here with transparent proof and hard evidence of the two being closer than ever now as sports.
