Canelo leaves before Benavidez fight and it didn't look good

Canelo leaves before Benavidez fight against Zurdo and it looked terrible for Canelo Alvarez to say the least. Learn why below.

It was Cinco De Mayo weekend 2026 and Alvarez and Benavidez are the two best Mexican boxers in the world right now pound for pound.

David Benavidez being a Mexican American. Here’s the facts at what happened at the weekend:

  • Canelo Alvarez was shown ringside at T-Mobile Arena during the event.
  • He was there to support Jaime Munguia in the co-main event.
  • When Canelo appeared on the arena screens, Benavidez fans booed him.
  • David Benavidez called out Canelo in his post-fight interview.
  • Fans online mocked Canelo for “avoiding” Benavidez.
  • Comments called him a “coward” who only fights with size advantages.
  • The narrative: Canelo left the conversation without addressing Benavidez.
  • Munguia won his fight by decision, with Canelo as his “biggest supporter” ringside.
  • Benavidez said he’d fight Canelo at 175: “if they want to come get it at 175, let’s get it”.
  • Social posts framed Canelo’s exit as ducking: “Sad that he’s still calling out Canelo…he’ll never get over that world class job”.

Canelo said himself he was only there to watch the Jaime Munguia fight.

A kind of lame excuse as fans would have wanted to see the two Mexicans in the ring on Cinco De Mayo 2026 after Benavidez called out Alvarez afterwards.

Here is what Benavidez said calling Canelo out after his win over ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez at the weekend.

Who knows what fights for them both at some point, Alvarez returns in September first up.
