The planned Pacquiao vs Mayweather 2 rematch on Netflix this September is supposedly still going ahead but more has come.
Many reports and even the Filipino eight-weight division world champion himself has said that Mayweather took an advanced pay check payment early already for their rematch this September.
Mayweather has gone very silent recently though and as of Netflix on the bout as well.
This followed many reports that Mayweather has problems with the IRS, has problems with jewelry companies and many real estate companies and more.
Now it has been widely reported that his eight-division world champion Filipino rival has bought an old boxing gym of his (adding further speculation to Mayweather’s financial debt woes some are saying he is in that could stretch into the millions).
Here’s what’s going on with Manny Pacquiao buying Floyd Mayweather’s old gym + the rematch situation:
10 facts on Pacquiao buying Mayweather’s old gym
- Gym location: It’s Mayweather’s former Hollywood, Los Angeles gym that Pacquiao acquired and rebranded as “Pacquiao Prime Boxing”.
- Timing: Pacquiao took over the space on Monday, April 6, 2026. The gym is set to open this summer.
- Why this gym: Pacquiao’s team pointed to location and visibility in the Hollywood corridor, with high daily traffic, as key drivers.
- New purpose: It won’t be open to the public like before. It will operate as a private training center for professional fighters, athletes and select guests.
- Expansion plans: Pacquiao said he wants to build more boxing gyms and help develop fighters. The team is looking at expanding the model across major markets.
- Symbolism: The takeover comes in the lead-up to their rematch. Pacquiao was pictured standing in front of Mayweather’s image — one that will soon be replaced.
- Context of closure: The Mayweather-branded facility was closed after eviction due to unpaid rent and a lawsuit. Pacquiao’s acquisition followed those financial issues.
- Pacquiao’s stated goal: “This is our passion… To build more boxing gyms and help develop fighters”. He framed it as creating opportunities for the next generation.
- CEO comment: Jas Mathur, CEO of Pacquiao Promotions, said “There was a chance to build something much bigger. We’re looking at this differently”.
- Rebrand visible: Exterior shots show the “Mayweather Los Angeles” sign being replaced with “Pacquiao Prime Boxing” signage.
Is the rematch actually happening?
- Scheduled date/venue: They were announced to meet in a blockbuster rematch at Las Vegas’ Sphere on September 19, 2026, live on Netflix.
- Contract dispute: Mayweather claimed the bout wouldn’t count on their professional records and suggested it would only be an exhibition. Pacquiao’s team says they signed for a real fight and threatened legal action.
- Pacquiao’s stance: “We both signed the contract and we both got advances on our purses, so there’s no way we’re going to cancel this fight”. “What we signed is a real fight… We signed both, and I hope he honors it”.
- Team confidence: CEO Jas Mathur: “We are 100 percent confident that the overall outcome from this situation will turn out positive… Floyd has to live up to his obligations”.
- Current status: As of 7 days ago, Pacquiao and his team say they are confident the issues will be ironed out and the fight will still happen. A new agreement is being thrashed out to save the bout from collapse.
So basically — Pacquiao definitely bought and rebranded the Hollywood gym.
The rematch is scheduled and Pacquiao’s camp says it’s happening — but they’re still resolving a contract dispute over whether it’s an official fight or exhibition.
Who knows what is happening with Mayweather.
