Canelo Alvarez was asked about one David Benavidez fighting on the upcoming Mexican Cinco De Mayo date instead of him for a change.
Benavidez takes on Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez next up for the cruiserweight title.
That’s a big fight for him but realistically Canelo is a middleweight so the weight between middleweight and cruiserweight means a fight between the two won’t happen at this point.
Asked by Fight Hype on others on the red carpet of the Ring awards last night Canelo laughed off Benavidez fighting on his Cinco De Mayo date saying he doesn’t care:
“No, May. I cannot make it for May. So, I need to recover my elbow. So, it’s going to be fine in September. No, I don’t really care who takes that day. So, I made it.”
Here’s the details next up for Benavidez vs Ramirez:
- Opponent: Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (WBA & WBO cruiserweight champion).
- Date: Saturday, May 2, 2026 (closest Saturday to May 5; traditional Cinco de Mayo fight date).
- Location: Likely T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada.
- Stakes: Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) moves up from light heavyweight to challenge for cruiserweight titles; aims for three-division champ status. Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs) defends his belts.
Ultimately Canelo Alvarez remains the far bigger name in boxing than David Benavidez and simply doesn’t need him at this point.
Alvarez is far more suited to middleweight and with Benavidez fighting at cruiserweight now, the fight won’t be happening due to the difference in weight.
Some big news came over night for Canelo Alvarez here as well.
