Is Philly Shell Still Effective

Is Philly shell still effective in the current era of boxing as of 2026 at the moment and beyond this year and into the future? We think it is.

Why can’t it be?

If you look at the best defensive fighter in the world at the moment since Floyd Mayweather, New Jersey’s Shakur Stevenson, okay, he doesn’t always use the Philly shell but that doesn’t mean it cannot be used.

Fighters in general are more attacking in these times and maybe neglect defense a bit in today’s era of professional boxing but the unique Philly Shell is timeless for us, from its origins to the likes of James Toney and Floyd Mayweather using various variations of it most notably in recent decades at the highest level of boxing.

It narrow the target for an attack where a boxer makes themselves slim and turn to the side almost to use their shoulder to deflect punches coming towards them by almost covering their head with their shoulder in a side, more slim stance for the opponent.

In a time where big knockouts are more frequent than ever in boxing maybe more emphasis can be put on it by some emerging new prospects and contenders this year in professional boxing.

It is not easy for everyone to adapt it to their style however.

People forget how unique and genius the likes of Floyd Mayweather and James Tony were with their use of it and that’s why you don’t see it as much at the moment in current boxing.

It is very difficult to implement at the highest level of professional boxing in a live fight but if anyone can, more frequently, if he wanted to, it would quite possibly be Shakur Stevenson.
