Lately Oleksandr Usyk has looked to fight former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in a fight that has come about out of nowhere recently.
It has taken many in boxing off guard including ourselves and it shows you that fighters are not always motivated by belts as we believe is the case here.
Usyk recently vacated his WBO heavyweight title after they ordered him to take on Fabio Wardley of the UK which he simply did not find interesting enough a fight so he gave up the belt.
He then moved forward to look for a bout with Wilder instead and said as much on social media. The thinking behind it has confounded some fans but not really when you break it down.
Wilder is the biggest hitting puncher of all time in the history of all of boxing and is still a big name in America and had a solid comeback win in the sport earlier this year.
Why Does Usyk Want To Fight Deontay Wider
He is a big personality still in the sport and as is Usyk, who now speaks a bit of English by this point, so the story line of it will sell with these two larger than life personalities.
Wardley is not really known outside of boxing and Wilder and Usyk is a much more explosive mix in terms of big personalities that fans both in the East and West know about.
On the face of it as well the bout is an explosive one, Usyk is at the peak of his powers now and Wilder always brings the action.
If you look at it as well, Usyk in a way recently became a free agent as well having parted company with his old promoter Alex and can if he wants, get the fight onto the new Paramount deal that the UFC and TKO are bringing to boxing in the new year.
Paramount is an American network first and foremost, but worldwide after, so Wilder is a big name in America for this as well. Wilder sells in America.
