Footwork might be one of the most important things in all of boxing, not just professional boxing, but doesn’t get enough time put to it at all.
It allows fighters at all levels and certainly at the highest level to set up attacks, get out of the way of counters, control the distance of a fight, deliver powerful combinations and move out of the way of anything coming back.
It doesn’t get talked enough about maybe to casual boxing fans or the general sports fan who tunes in just for the big world title fights or mega events nowadays that boxing puts on internationally all over the world.
Mastering Footwork: The Forgotten Foundation of Great Boxing
Whether proper foot work, a prospect can never make world title contention level or become champion.
Even if he appears to be a big knockout merchant or whatever, he will get found out near the highest level without footwork against proper world champions, no doubt about it.
Hitting and not getting hit is the name of the game, and doing as much damage as possible, and getting paid and getting the heck out of there, and selling tickets and ratings.
That’s professional boxing.
Footwork will always be part of the sweet science one.
Boxers that had some of the best footwork in history include Willie Pepp, Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather, Guillermo Rigondeaux and many more.
