The Real Reason So Many Rematches Are Worse Than The Original

Maybe you can compare the boxing rematch the sequel of a blockbuster hit movie on the big screen, the part two often doesn’t live up to the first one.

That’s maybe not an accurate comparison but you get the idea.

Sometimes if a fight is an absolute barnstormer the first time it is always going to be hard to live up to that in the second fight.

That can happen as both fighters know about one another’s fight styles properly after sharing the ring in the first fight and usually one makes the better adjustments the second time around and can win the second bout handily.

The Real Reason So Many Rematches Are Worse Than the Original

Case in point the two fights involving Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn this year in 2025.

Eubank Jr won the first, Benn the second — but more convincingly then Eubank won the first bout in — dropping Eubank in the second.

Benn had done his homework and Eubank Jr struggled with the weight.

It doesn’t matter on the fighter or the fight style, Benn overcame all that and simply came in and did a professional job in the rematch.

The fight was not as good as the first simply because of how good a fighter Conor Benn was the second time around.

Alas, rematches don’t always live up to the hype for a number of reasons as you can see, but not always.

In rare cases they are better than the first fight.

Who knows if the Mayweather vs Pacquiao rematch will happen — maybe that will eclipse the first one if it does.
