Why Some Belts Matter And Others Are Just Expensive Props

We live in a time now in 2025 where belts still are important but they are not everything for the big fights in boxing as well at the same time.

When it comes to the very biggest fights that is, with the sport’s biggest stars and best champions.

Why Some Belts Matter and Others Are Just Expensive Props

They are still important though and most realize there are four belt organizations at the end of the day for world titles:

  • WBC
  • WBA
  • IBF
  • WBO

Not interim or regular titles either. WBA have the ‘Super’ title which essentially is their main world title in each weight class.

There should be less interim or anything else titles outside of just one proper world championship belt from each of these organizations.

That makes things clearer for new fans coming to the sport and indeed many of the old fans as well even.

With respect, the WBU, IBO or anything outside of the four organizations above just are not world title belts – not genuine ones.

Really, there should be just one world title belt per division like the old days so fans know exactly who is the best fighter in each weight.

Just like in the UFC.

Maybe the best solution for now though is just focusing on the above or part of the above solution and focusing on those four as well.

Might be useful as well when formulating division and pound for pound rankings moving forward.

On belts, there was an outstanding moment at the highest level recently when Crawford gave back Canelo his belts here.
