Gennady Golovkin Was One Of The Best Middleweights Ever But He Needs Some Help Now

Sometimes people only see what some of these fighters have done in boxing or even read their books and know some about their life stories, but there’s more.

Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin of Kazakhstan didn’t have things easy growing up and the level of determination he showed early on, then in his amateur and professional boxing career, saw him become one of definitely the best middleweights that ever lived and had some of the greatest nights on the old HBO Boxing network in America that the company ever had.

They had a few bloody good nights too with Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins (another middleweight legend) and many others (Manny Pacquiao and so on).

As he went on though he got hit too much, he relied on his power too much and he got bust up a few times down the stretch of his career.

A pure fighting man in every sense of the word but what’s interesting lately is what he is doing in amateur boxing, in countries around the world, quietly.

Boxing got its place in the upcoming Olympics in LA in 2028 (which was not guaranteed) and Golovkin as Chairman of World Boxing (the organization governing boxing at the next Olympics) had a large part to do with that.

What’s more, he became the President of World Boxing recently which is another promotion from them and from the amateur code, worldwide, at grass roots boxing level.

People don’t realize though to get this was not easy – 58 countries around the world in terms of selectors made this decision from federations in 58 different countries.

That this man, Golovkin, has done this as a former amateur and professional fighter, is relatively impressive, the level of learning and self improvement and education in so many areas he would have to have done quietly behind the scenes, to bring himself up to the standard required for this job he has ahead of him, at the next Olympics, is above reproach.

This is not some brand ambassador job — this is the real thing — he’s basically almost like a type of CEO of the entire amateur boxing sport at the moment.

Not quite though, the IBA who also are the big organization in the sport who do a great job as well, have appointed Manny Pacquiao as their vice president recently.

Pacquiao is a Hall of Famer and more accomplished than Golovkin as a fighter, if Pacquiao can work with Golovkin, from both organizations, grass roots boxing will do well.

Some people actually think the IBA (International Boxing Federation) ran by a man from Russia is actually the better organization of the two. They are probably right. With respect to Golovkin, all the big name pro fighters and former champions are appearing at IBA events around the world, not at Golovkin and World Boxing’s events.

Golovkin must make more of an effort to include the IBA in what he does moving forward or face the wrath of the boxing family worldwide in all levels of boxing.

The IBA are an outstanding organization who do a lot for boxing around the world.

On Golovkin, apparently he’s looking at a comeback fight in boxing.

Time will tell.

Work with the IBA moving forward and get your organization World Boxing to, and the Federations who voted you in, or cease to be relevant and the IBA and others will take amateur boxing forward now and before the Olympics, and the Olympics after that.
