When it comes to the best boxer of all time pound for pound a few names frequently come up for boxing fans over the years in a pickle of debate.
The likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Roberto Duran and others usually come up.
Muhammad Ali being the popular choice for many.
Not for respected commentator and analyst Teddy Atlas however.
Teddy Atlas Reveals Who And Why Is Best Boxer That Ever Lived
Speaking on his podcast this weekend Atlas said:
“I’m talking about Ray Robinson, the original Sugar Ray. Fought everyone from lightweight to light heavyweight, all the best in the world. The only time he was stopped was by heat stroke, carried out of the ring in 110-degree heat at Yankee Stadium, it was in a July or August, versus Joey Maxim when he stepped up to try for the light heavyweight title — which he would have won if he hadn’t collapsed.”
As it happens, Atlas places Muhammad Ali as number five on his list.
A good list.
Ray Robinson is thought by some to this day to be one of the best fighting machines that ever lived in any sport.
Fighting is what made him tick.
That’s who he was.
A 100 per cent pure fighting man in every part of his DNA, bone and psyche.
