Canelo Alvarez certainly has an entire country behind him (and more than that too) in Mexico like Bellew says here, but this is a stretch.
Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t.
He could be right, he could be wrong.
Prince Naseem Hamed back in the day was a huge character in boxing worldwide and went to America and battered people like Kevin Kelly in the US in their primes.
He brought the big money and big bucks into the small weight classes before Floyd Mayweather did back in the day.
Mayweather often credits Hamed for this, most should as well.
Look at where the small weight classes are now in Japan with Inoue, Nakatani and others?
They all owe Hamed some thanks to an extent.
Tony Bellew Makes Huge Naseem Hamed Claim
Speaking to Simon Jordan on the ‘Up Front’ show former world champion from Liverpool, UK, real life Rocky story Tony ‘The Bomber’ Bellew said if Nas was around today he’s be bigger than ever:
“Canelo Alvarez has a country behind him. Some fighters transcend weight classes—like Naseem Hamed could fill Wembley Arena 10 times over today.”
We live in a time now where big stadium shows are selling out all the time in the UK for only the big fights mainly.
It has been happening frequently in recent years.
In the era of social media too, could you imagine the promotions and entrances Hamed would have pulled off worldwide in today’s times?
In the times of the UFC, Netflix, ESPN, WWE, DAZN, Fox Australia, TNT, Sky Sports, NBC (during the Olympics) Amazon Prime and soon Paramount promoting world championship professional boxing?
