Italy had a new professional boxing champion recently for a country that traditionally is purely a soccer country mostly.

Boxing is growing now in Italy now and the likes of Matchroom Sport in Europe have been doing some shows there with some success in the last decade.

But now they have their own proper professional boxers there now who can actually sell tickets and sell arenas out, that is very important for professional boxing at the end of the day.

Michael Magnesi is one of those new Italian fighters who captured the WBC Silver Super Featherweight title earlier this year in Italy.

He stopped at the greatest Italian boxer of all time Italian American Rocky Marciano’s statue here recently saying on Instagram (Italian to English translation):

“A real honor to be awarded the ROCKY MARCIANO @festivalrockymarciano award as the best fighter of the year. Thank you infinite, proud to carry with me the @wbcmoro belt @wbcboxing 🇮🇹🇲🇽🔰”

Marciano to this day is still considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers and heavyweight champions of all time.

In today’s terms he would have only being around a super-middleweight, around the same height and frame as Carl Froch or Joe Calzaghe.

He went undefeated and was never beaten, by anyone, not one.

For the size of him being a small heavyweight, who was not the most technically proficient boxer when he started as a professional, to improve like he did, as quickly as he did, to go on to still be regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights ever, is still remarkable.

Even after all these years.

Michael Magnesi will hope to win a world title himself in the time ahead.
