Former super-middleweight champion of the world Carl Froch was a keen observer of former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s comeback.
Froch doesn’t always get it right but his frank candid takes has seen his new podcast continue to expand worldwide.
Wilder won by 7th round TKO on Friday night in Kansas and boxed well for the most part.
Speaking on his podcast and show ‘Froch on Fighting’ Carl Froch spoke on Wilder’s comeback on Friday night:
“Let’s start with Deontay Wilder and his fight on Friday night against Tyrrell Herndon. It was a tune-up fight, and Herndon, I think, turned up to get beat up. I think the referee knew it, didn’t he? Because as soon as Deontay Wilder started unloading a couple of overhand, sloppy overhand rights—really, weren’t they?—and he was connecting, he put one through the middle, and after Herndon really didn’t respond and didn’t give much back, the ref just thought, “I don’t like watching somebody get beat up when they don’t seem to be trying,” so the ref jumped in and stopped the fight. I mean, Wilder—which is the con—what we’re concentrating on—what’s next for him? Has he got a career left? I just think—I mean, he’s lost four of his last six fights. He lost twice to Fury, then sparked Helenius, but then he got battered by Parker and ironed out by Zhang. So after that, you kind of think to yourself, “He’s finished.” It’s all smoke and mirrors now. Everyone’s thinking, “Is he back with that big punch?” and they want to get him—they want to see him get in there and throw the big knockout blow. Don’t forget, at one point, I think he was—was it 40 fights, 39 wins, 39 knockouts? There’s one point where he’s literally knocked out everybody he’s beaten, and he had that draw with Fury, and then just that trilogy with Fury—I think that just took everything out of him. He made a lot of money, and it’d be nice to see him now probably just hang his gloves up and turn it in. You know, I don’t like telling people to retire, but I like to give my opinion on what I think these fighters have done, and yeah, I just think that Deontay Wilder has had better days. And now, if he ends up fighting anybody with a pulse who can punch, he could be hurt.”
Froch is coming with that from a fighter’s perspective but Froch also should have mentioned that Wilder was coming off two brutal shoulder surgeries going into the fight.
With injuries dating back years, Wilder will get sharper and have more timing after his next tune up fight as well.
If Wilder wants to fight on that’s up to him, he boxed well on Friday and still has the crushing power.
That power if it connects with anyone is a problem for anyone in the sport.
Deontay Wilder also parted company with his old trainer at the last minute before the fight.
