Multi-weight division boxing world champion and former UFC women’s champion Holly Holm brings a lot of new fans to boxing at the moment.
She came back to boxing from the UFC victoriously last night and looked very good in the win as well.
She won over Yolanda Vega by unanimous points decision this weekend.
After the fight she said at the post-fight press conference of MMA star Cris Cyborg being at ringside:
“You know, Chris and I once stood across the cage from each other and had an incredible fight. Afterward, we ended up training together and became friends. She lives not too far from here, so I figured she’d be around. She’s always been super supportive, even through messages. We’ve become friends, and she’s been a positive influence. I was thankful to have her here tonight.”
She went on to say on her return to boxing:
“Two-minute rounds can feel so short. I was still training five-minute rounds in the gym. As the fight got closer, I’d work with one partner, sticking to the five-minute buzzer for the team, but I’d do two minutes, take a minute off, and do two more—that’s the five rounds. For the last two weeks, I’d go in at the end of sparring with my best training partners. They’d stay late and help me, doing 10 rounds with two rounds each so they’d be fresh and keep the pace up with me. It’s different from MMA to boxing. In MMA, I use combos and kicks, but in boxing, I’m only using my arms, which requires different conditioning. I’ve always been in shape for anything, but using only my arms as weapons is unique. I wore 16-ounce gloves every mid-session and sparring session to get my arms back in boxing shape, ensuring they wouldn’t feel like they weighed 100 pounds each in the ring. My team was there for me, and their discipline helped.”
Obviously she is used to training for a lot more things and more intense cardio as well.
Holm is no stranger to boxing as a multi-weight division world champion already and brings over some UFC and MMA fans, new ones, young and old, to boxing with this.
Clever promoting from MVP Promotions and boxing with this.
As more and more MMA and UFC fighters continue to have professional boxing matches and more boxing exhibitions.
Here’s the moment Holly Holm got her hand raised.
