Deontay Wilder had a classic comeback victory this weekend in boxing and called upon his old shot variation from years gone by.
A classic win and performance from Wilder was enough to see him get the victory by 7th round TKO victory this weekend.
He used the jab a lot but his hooks were noticeably shorter, as were his straight right hands right over the shoulder, more orthodox than previously.
Deontay Wilder On A Punch That Worked Well In Comeback Victory
Speaking after his big win this weekend in Kansas at the post fight press conference Wilder said:
“Well, you know, we’ve been working on a lot of things. I think one of the aspects affected was the hook as well. A lot of people don’t understand, but I have a nice hook. I also have a nice body shot, you know. I displayed it one time. I should have done it as much as I did in sparring, you know. I want to showcase more than just the right hand because it’s obvious that, if you look at my history, you understand what the power shot is, what’s the money maker, and what will get guys out of there in your career. So, I don’t want to be predictable, you know. Everyone comes to see that, especially with my opponents; that’s the first thing they’re waiting for, and they’ll do anything and everything to try to avoid it. But I want to play more strategically, you know. With that being said, I’m taking my time to set up shots and not rely solely on the right hand. I want to be a complete, all-around fighter, I would say as well. And, um, it’s going to take a little time, you know, one step at a time, brick by brick, and that’s what we’re doing. We’re not letting anyone rush it, and, um, we are going to get it together. I’ve been out for about a year or so, and, um, you can tell the rust is there, like my trainer said. They’re in the gym, in the ring right now, sweeping off the rust—but we enjoyed it, we had a good time, and, um, I couldn’t have had a better opponent to come back with and get everything going for me again. Absolutely, I think we’re going to be great.”
Wilder is very level headed and he literally only changed his trainer before the fight on fight week as well.
He will have a proper set up next time and he knows what he needs to work on.
He can’t switch off against top level opponents by not keeping his guard up after he commits punches and walks straight backwords.
Instead of to the side.
He was caught with some lazy jabs by his opponent at times.
Wilder will be much better next time but overall an excellent fight from him.
