Most boxing fans old and new to the sport have no idea about the brutal physical injuries former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder had.
Sure, as he makes his comeback on Friday night in Kansas he’s in a good place mentally and spiritually again.
But no one, until now, has known that he’s coming off the back recently of not one, but two serious shoulder injuries.
Deontay Wilder Reveals Brutal Surgery Ahead Of Comeback
Speaking to Tris Dixon of Boxing Scene ahead of Friday’s big fight Wilder revealed:
“I’m going to feel amazing. My mind is back, my spirit is back, and I’m free of injuries. They used to call me “Windmill Wilder”—I don’t have that windmill anymore; I’ve got it now, you know? I’ve had two shoulder surgeries, which caused me to be injured for the last three to four years. I had to do what I had to do. I could’ve sat around to heal, but anyone who knows shoulder injuries knows it’s one of the longest recoveries. Every time I lifted my arm, threw my right hand, or even wiped, my shoulder hurt. I was in pain 24 hours a day, but I had to maintain a regular lifestyle. You adapt to the pain and keep going. You mentioned I want to be undisputed—I want the smoke with the likes of Joshua and Usyk, given he’s got the belts. I want whoever’s at the top, whoever makes great fights. I don’t have a list of names. If a fight gets me to my end goal, let’s go. We’re all in the same division—always close to a title fight, one night. I want everyone in my way; I want to take their heads off.”
So the shoulder issue was obviously there for many years.
Without that now and not as wild or windmill in his punching, he could actually be punching with more force now.
Friday night should be explosive, however the fight goes for Deontay Wilder or his opponent.
