Roy Jones Reveals To Andre Ward His Secret Behind The Jab

The jab is thought as the most important punch in all of boxing and certainly in 2025, in professional boxing, it is still very true.

It sets everything up for fighters but it can also be used as part of offense and defense.

It is vital for all weight classes and all levels of professional boxing.

Roy Jones Jr is one of only two men to win the middleweight and heavyweight title in boxing history (Bob Fitzsimmons being the other).

He used it in his career to great effect.

Roy Jones Reveals To Andre Ward His Secret Behind The Jab

Speaking on ‘All The Smoke’ to former light-heavyweight champion and pound for pound star Andre Ward Jones revealed the secrets behind the jab:

“Roy Jones: Let me explain. If you throw a jab at my face, I’m watching it. The first jab, I’m ready. If you throw it again, I’ll roll out. I know where you’re coming from. I’m always looking for your jab because it’s the first punch everyone learns in the gym. I’ve got every way to counter it. Most fighters lead with a jab, so I don’t always throw mine first. If I lead with a left hook, it’s to avoid giving you my jab to set me up. If you land a jab on my face, I can land a right hand or left hook—power punches. I’ll take your jab to land those all day.

Andre Ward: But you’re tricky. After your jab, you pull back and frame off it, keeping your stance solid. That makes it harder to get inside.

Roy Jones: Exactly. You’re not an easy target because you know how to frame off your jab. You stay set, which makes it tougher for me to get to you compared to most fighters. You’re no easy fix.”

Always technically brilliant from Roy Jones and Ward.

An important insight for budding boxers at all levels.

Technical analysis is still something that has to be importantly done by new broadcasters, analysts and people coming into the sport of boxing in 2025.

To educate the many new fans boxing is gaining worldwide everything at the moment and beyond on the technical aspects of the sweet science.

Very important.
