Why Rocky Was More Than Just A Boxing Hero And An Italian Success Story

You know, the Rocky movie series is probably the only actual Hollywood thing that legit boxers and people in boxing actually respect and have time for outside of the sport.

Even in today’s times in 2025 where the planet is not in great shape, the sport of boxing, and the Rocky movies’ series, still inspires the masses. Quite rightly too.

Look at how popular boxing is becoming again now as a sport worldwide, in the East and West, again.

The Rocky movie still connects the sport, like the Olympics and other things like the heavyweight championship of the world, to the masses.

Important to remember that.

People love Rocky and the Rocky story but there’s much more to it than just an Italian immigrant who became champion of the world.

Rocky wasn’t just some Italian/American TV series either like the Sopranos or something.

Rocky was much bigger than that even, not just for boxing, but all of sport. Many still tie boxing with the Rocky movies.

When you look at it, particularly with all the problems with immigration in places like the US and UK in the West, Rocky still has a huge part of US culture in today’s times — maybe now more than ever.

As Floyd Mayweather’s uncle and former trainer Roger Mayweather once said on the fight game and professional boxing:

“Most people don’t know s*** about boxing.”

He’s right — they don’t.

But even he, and hardcore boxing people alike, all (he would have too Roger Mayweather if he were still alive) still concede that the Rocky series is a fundamental part of boxing as a sport and always will be.

In some parts of the world we are seeing much evil now, depraved, unnatural evil Satanism to be more than only judged but condemned.

Julius Caesar of Rome at one time was by far the most powerful individual that ever lived on the Earth, even in today’s times, by some margin.

And even he couldn’t even put a tiny dent into the planet or change anything God created, or upset the natural order, not even a thing.

The sky is still blue and grass is still green.

Alas, boxing and professional sport has the power to be a bright, pure light in these times.

So does the Rocky movie series — it always will too.

Boxing fans love it and it is important new fans to the sport know about it as boxing grows and reaches the next generation in these times.

Rocky also represents the battle of good against evil in many ways.

Throughout his journey Balboa overcame evil at all points in his life as a fighter, people love that.

People love when the good guys win and bad guys lose — it is just human nature.

Good has always defeated evil and the Rocky series, while we now live in different times with younger fans consuming influencers and streamers, and so on, must remember the traditions and cult classics of the sport as well like Rocky.

Maybe it would be good if there was some documentary or something by Netflix or DAZN made about the Rocky series to educate younger fans.

Alas, there is a place for all the good stuff in boxing — as old and young boxing fans and even combat sports fans — merge at the moment in both the East and the West — in their watching of big boxing events (some for the first time).

The Rocky movie will never die in boxing.
