Roy Jones Reveals How He Got Into Boxing

Roy Jones Jr the boxing legend and one of only two men to be world middleweight and heavyweight champion has dropped some knowledge here.

On where it all began in the sweet science and what powers him, and drives him, today. That’s God of course.

Speaking to the Brad Lea TV show boxing legend Roy Jones said:

“I started—my grandmother introduced me to it at a very young age by making me go to Sunday school. But none of that meant anything until I was about 10. It meant something because I knew there was a God, but it didn’t really have me deep into it until I was about 10. When I was 10, we started boxing. I had this guy—he was a lot older than me; I was 10, and these guys were like 19, 20 years old. This one guy named Rory Clark—same first name as me—was a big, strong guy. He could beat the heavy bag; he could bust a heavy bag with one punch, that’s how strong he was. But one day, some Jehovah’s Witnesses came to our house, and they were talking about God. They asked how many of us believed. All of us said yes—I said yes because my grandmother had been taking me to church, and I knew there was a God. All of us said yes except that big, strong guy. Now, I’m 10 years old—this is how God has been working in my life. After that, we knew there was one guy with us who didn’t believe in God. The following weekend, we went to a tournament called the Sunshine State Games in Gainesville, Florida. Everybody got a gold medal except who? The one guy who didn’t believe in God. That showed me right there—no matter how big, how strong, and how courageous you look, if you don’t believe in God, you ain’t going nowhere. He was the only one who didn’t win a gold medal. That was probably my first live example of how powerful God is. That was my first lesson, and I never looked back.”

Jones has been doing the odd bit of boxing promoting in recent years as well.

It is good to see his punditry on big fights in the media occasionally — his insights are invaluable.

So much knowledge on boxing it is crazy.
