Jermall Charlo Reveals Why He Was Gone From Boxing For So Long

Jermall Charlo the two-weight world champion is back in the sport shortly and has opened up on his absence ahead of the big comeback.

This is a year of big come backs for many in boxing, so many champions getting back in the sport of professional boxing worldwide this year.

Speaking to a group of reporters in an open media scrum at the latest press conference for his fight against Thomas LaManna on May 31st, Charlo said:

“It’s not like I didn’t want to fight or didn’t call for a fight. I was like, “What’s up? What’s up?” You know what I’m saying? I’ve got bills to pay too, just like y’all. We’re all the same—that’s the only thing we have in common. I didn’t set the fight off, and then, boom, the new year came around. All I could do was keep training. So, this whole time, I’ve been training, sharpening up, and getting my team together. Jamal, you mentioned the Conor fight—Lomachenko messaging you on Instagram, going back and forth. How long has that been going on, and what was he saying to you? I don’t know. I guess when the last Tank fight happened, he started writing me, flooding my messages, spamming the hell out of me. It’s weird—I think that’s some weird stuff. At the end of the day, I’m my own boss. If I don’t want to fight him tomorrow or get on this card tomorrow, I don’t have to. The disrespect—I’d rather fight someone respectful. We can make good money together instead of fighting someone disrespectful who doesn’t deserve to make a dollar with me. I’ll starve you if that’s the game. You feel me? But him running his mouth and all that—it’s going to make me want to knock him out. That’s what I’m here to do.”

Charlo is still undefeated in the sport with a perfect record of 33-0-22 KO.

A huge talent in the sport that will not be stopped when focused, in terms of competing at the very highest level and winning world titles.

Excellent fighter.

He’s still only 34 and with people like Beterbiev at 40 competing at the highest level of boxing pound for pound, and Manny Pacquiao boxing at 46, plenty of years ahead for him.
