Renowned trainer Robert Garcia has put the boot in on Devin Haney’s father and manager Bill Haney after Haney’s recent fight in NY.
Haney beat Jose Ramirez on points in a card that was not great for most boxing fans who were watching.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Garcia took issue with Haney senior in particular afterwards:
“Look, I’ve always said this—before the fight and after the fight—I’ve always spoken well of the Haneys. They’ve always given me nothing but respect. But for Bill to post a picture of Jose in the ambulance after the fight and say something like they hurt him and had to send him to the hospital—that’s him lying to himself. He knows he’s lying to the world, and that’s what disappoints me because he’s a grown man, not a kid. He knows there were no locker rooms in that arena since it was a small corner setup in the street. The locker rooms were in the hotel two blocks away. They clearly told us in the rules meeting that after the fight, every fighter would go back to the street, get into an ambulance, and be checked by the doctor. It’s just like taking a cab ride—it’s standard procedure. Right now, my fighter, Paro, just won by knockout. He still goes to the back to see the doctor—every fighter does that in every single fight. Everyone should know that. They go, get cleared by the doctor, and then head to their locker room. In New York, every fighter went to the ambulance, the doctors checked them, released them, and then a car drove us to the hotel. That’s exactly what happened, and Bill knew that. So I don’t understand why he’s trying to lie to himself. Why lie to the fans and the crowd? Instead of apologizing for the type of fight his son put on—running and running—he shouldn’t try to lie to the crowd and say, “Oh, you still hurt him and sent him to the hospital.” That’s not true. When I see him, I’m not going to fight with him, but I’ll tell him, “Why do you have to lie to the crowd when you knew exactly what happened? You knew everyone had to be checked by the doctor in the ambulance.”
The fight was not very well received.
Like the rest of the card either.
The next time a big boxing event is brought back to New York organizers and fans must make a point about it to urge the fighters to give more entertainment for fans.
