Chris Eubank Sr has finally opened up on what really went on between him and Jr the week of the Conor Benn fight right up to the fight.
For weeks he was saying he was not going to the fight, but we thought he might have a last minute change in mindset on that.
Speaking on his own show, ‘Call Chris Eubank’, senior opened up on his last minute change of heart to go to the fight and support Eubank Jr:
“I was always going to be there for my son, just not on anyone else’s timeline. I got so many comments: “You’ve got to be there for your son.” Every time I read them, I thought, “I’m not even reading that because the fight’s not going to happen.” Let me be clear: until the referee said, “Box,” I would’ve bet my life the fight wouldn’t happen. At 8:10 p.m. on Friday night, I sent him a message: “Call me when you’re in private, please.” He called back around 10:00 p.m. I hadn’t spoken to him, and you could sense it in his interviews and press conferences—he hadn’t been in contact with me. When someone’s going the wrong way, you have to let them go. The more you try to hold them back, the harder they pull away. Junior called and said, “I didn’t want to call, Dad, because I can’t hear anything negative.” I said, “Okay, where are you?” He explained he was at the Park Plaza. With the world’s media there, I thought, “How am I going to get in?” So, I put on a disguise—a Miyake coat down to my ankles, a hoodie like the green mod coats from the 1960s, a mask pulled up, a cap, and black Primole trainers. Junior said, “No one’s going to recognize you looking like that.” He booked me a room, we went up, and we spoke. I said, “What do you want me to do, son? This is your show, your gig.” He said, “Lots of things need to change now.” They had an orchestra, a rapper, four types of entertainment—all to substitute for me not being there. When I arrived, everything else was scrapped except the orchestra.”
He went on to genuinely further disclose:
“This is probably the most private thing I can share, but it’s the truth. Junior is not an emotional person—not at all. You might say, “Within reason,” but no. He sent me a message that said, “Glad you are here.” That’s like the moon coming within a mile of Earth—it doesn’t happen. To someone who doesn’t understand, it seems small, but it’s huge. It’s wonderful for his future. When he hangs up his gloves, if he retired now, he’d have a richness money can’t buy. He’d be a prince for life. Junior, you won the hearts of the people. You won my heart.”
Class act from Senior.
He didn’t have to reveal all that stuff.
It shows how loyal a person he is. Very good.
Disloyalty and any form of betrayal should never be tolerated and always dealt with in the most ruthless of manners with anyone,
Always the best and most efficient way to deal with matters quickly.
Not the case with Eubank senior, a good guy in the sport, without doubt.
As for the fight — what a fight it was.
One of the best seen in the UK in recent years, really, a true classic in boxing.
All the fighters and teams can thank Eubank Sr for the events pay per view success as well — him turning up on the night moved the needle big time.
