Fighters of today’s times are simply standing on the shoulders of giants of men gone before them. And Chris Eubank Jr knows it.
He takes on Conor Benn on Saturday April 26th in a big stadium fight in the UK that sees the Benn vs Eubank rivalry renowned again many years after their boxing legend father’s Chris senior and Nigel Benn once threw punches at one another.
Speaking to the Ring ‘Unboxed’ segment Eubank Jr said on inspiration growing up:
“What fighters have I grown up watching and studied the most? Well, there’s a man on your t-shirt right there, Roy Jones Jr. who coached me for a number of years. That was a fighter I would dream of replicating when I was a kid watching all the highlights.”
He added:
“Fighters like Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns, my father. I would take things from a lot of different fighters. Floyd Mayweather, Pernell Whitaker, Mike Tyson. The list is endless.”
A solid line-up of legends there.
Good to see Pernell Whitaker get a mention.
He’s not mentioned enough frankly by those in the sport in today’s times.
On Eubank vs Benn this weekend here’s the fight times in all major cities worldwide as well more details on the event.
