Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez but in another massive display this past weekend impressing everyone in boxing.
Just 24-years-old with trainer Robert Garcia and promoter Eddie Hearn he has a good team.
After beating Pedro Guevara in Philadelphia at the weekend he gave his reaction, as did his team, below.
Speaking at the post-fight press conference Rodriguez and his team said via Fight Hub TV YouTube:
“Good evening, everybody. I think you’ll all agree that the performance from this man tonight was just incredible. At just 24 years of age, he continues to go from strength to strength. We already knew he was ranked pound-for-pound number five, but I believe this guy is on track to become the pound-for-pound number one fighter in the next few years. An incredible knockout victory to defend his WBC Super Flyweight World Championship. Over to you for questions—myself, Bam, and of course, Robert Garcia are here as well. Please raise your hand if you have a question.
Reporter: What’s next for you, Bam?
Bam: Well, whatever Eddie says, I want the unifications at 115 pounds. But if those don’t happen, we’ll see what happens from there.
Eddie Hearn: How many title defenses do you want next year?
Bam: Two. Just like I said, any unification that comes my way, I’ll take. If not, I can’t stay at 115 forever—I’m growing, so I’ll move up if the unifications don’t come.Reporter: You just fought in front of 10,000 people on the West Coast. What did you think about developing a fan base on the East Coast, fighting here for the first time?
Bam: It was definitely different, especially considering where I’m from. The atmosphere was unique, but it was cool to experience it all, especially sharing fight week with Boots. Boots is another great fighter, so it was awesome to be part of that.Reporter: Yoka has history with your brother and is fighting a rematch against Juan Francisco Estrada in December. Is that the fight you’ll be targeting next, the winner of that fight?
Bam: I would love that fight. If it were up to me, it would’ve happened next, but I was waiting on Estrada to see if he would rematch. But that’s slipped away now, so we’ll wait again and see what happens.Reporter: Bam, what were your thoughts about fighting here in Philadelphia? Eddie, what did you think of the crowd tonight?
Bam: It was good. At first, it was a little different, just being on the East Coast for the first time, and being the co-main event again. It was something I had to think about, but once I realized the opportunity, I took it.
Eddie Hearn: For me, Phoenix has become almost like a second home for Bam. But we do need to go back to San Antonio. I was thinking tonight that our next show should be there. We’ve done a few smaller shows there when his profile wasn’t as big, but we had nearly 11,000 here tonight and 14,000 at our last show. We know we can bring big crowds to Philadelphia. When you have two flagship fighters, sometimes it makes sense to have them on the same show. I know Bam says he’s the co-main event, but really, I see tonight as a double main event, with Boots being from Philly and going on last. But Bam is 24 now, and a big homecoming in San Antonio is what we want. What I was most pleased with tonight was Bam’s performance. In the past, I think if it were a mandatory defense like this one, he might have dropped a level, but tonight, against a tough opponent, he absolutely destroyed him. It just shows how good he is getting.Robert Garcia: There were no second thoughts about coming out of our comfort zone to fight here. It’s been great being here. The crowds have shown us nothing but love, and we’re more than happy to come back if possible. That’s Eddie’s job to figure out, but we’d love to return. Bam is definitely ready to headline the next show. After tonight, he showed he’s one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. If we go back to San Antonio, that would be awesome.
Robert Garcia: Bam always trains hard. Since day one, he’s been dedicated. When we found out that Estrada wasn’t going to fight and was moving up in weight, there was a moment when Bam wanted to go back home and didn’t want to fight if it wasn’t against Estrada. But Eddie mentioned it was a mandatory defense, so we convinced him to take on the challenge. He trained hard as always, and that dedication showed tonight.
Reporter: Bam, was there any pressure fighting in his hometown? Did you feel like you had to make a statement?
Bam: I feel like there’s pressure every time I fight, especially now that I’m on the pound-for-pound list. People expect a lot from me. Like Eddie said earlier, if it was me in the past, I probably wouldn’t have performed as well, but now there’s a lot more pressure, more eyes on me, so I make sure to go out there and do what I did tonight.Reporter: Bam, Kevin Garcia with Fight Hyp. I just wanted to ask you: when you think about your next fight, what’s more important to you—unification bouts to get more titles, or taking a big-name fight, like you mentioned in the ring, maybe against Chocolatito, which could help grow your profile?
Bam: I would love the unifications, but if those fights don’t happen, I’d be fine fighting someone like Chocolatito. Either way, I just want to keep improving.Reporter: You’ve mentioned Robert Garcia as one of the reasons you’ve reached this level. Can you talk about what it’s been like working with him?
Bam: If it weren’t for Robert, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Not only does he train me, but he also manages me. From day one, he’s put me in the right position, and it’s all paid off. I wouldn’t be here without him.Reporter: George Hansen from C Boxing Info. Watching you over the years, every fight you get better and better. I was really impressed with your footwork tonight. Robert, what’s the secret? You can teach footwork, but it’s clear Bam has something special.
Robert Garcia: Bam’s footwork is beautiful. It’s not something you can just teach. It’s a natural gift. I’ve had fighters with good footwork, but Bam has a natural talent. Since he was 15, his movement has been impressive. It’s just something that comes naturally to him.Reporter: Bam, congratulations on your victory tonight. What are your thoughts on being part of a stacked card like the ones we’ve seen in the past?
Bam: That would be amazing. I’ve seen those cards and actually went to one in L.A. They’re awesome. To be part of something like that would be really cool. Hopefully, in the future, I’ll get the chance.Reporter: This question is for both you and Robert. What percentage of your potential do you think we’ve seen so far in your career?
Bam: You haven’t seen the full potential, that’s for sure. I’m a lot better than what I’ve shown, and I know I have more to give.
Robert Garcia: He’s only 24, so that says it all. There’s a lot more to come.Eddie Hearn: Alright, guys, thank you very much for your time.”
Big things ahead for him without question.
It is little wonder why most have him in their top ten pound for pound list in boxing.
