After defeating Tony Bellew in spectacular fashion this past weekend in the UK attention has now turned towards a possible heavyweight fight with Anthony Joshua for Usyk down the line.
Indeed, Usyk has intimated he will move to the heavyweight division next year and at this point, there’s really no challenge left at cruiserweight for him having completely cleared out the weight class.
Speaking after his KO victory over Bellew and if it was a dream to now become heavyweight champion, he said:
“I used to dream a lot. Becoming the heavyweight champion is my goal, not what I’m dreaming about.”
On the Joshua fight specifically, he added:
“It’s too early. It’s too early. If you want to speak on this then you can speak on it but we still need to wait a little bit. We need to see things in a real light.”
On what his dream in life actually is:
“You know what my dream is? So all people would respect each other. That’s my dream.”
In fairness, he’s a hard guy not to like.
Possibly one of the best lines ever said at a boxing press conference really.
It is thought that he will now have a long break and return sometime next March or April up at heavyweight.
